About The Artful Crafter

Eileen Bergen – The Artful Crafter

Hi and welcome! I’m Eileen Bergen. Since you’re here, I guess you want to know a bit about The Artful Crafter and me.

I didn’t have much time for crafting during my first two careers and only returned to my artistic roots after taking early retirement. Financial reverses spurred us to pinch pennies. What better way than to DIY?

I started designing my own greeting and calling cards using some user-friendly computer programs – since I had zero graphic design background.

My friends said they loved them; but I thought they were just being nice. When they started saying, “I’d like you to design some for me. How much would you charge?” I thought I might have the makings of a home-based business.

As my grasp of digital graphic design grew, I moved on to place cards, invitations, and fliers. Soon my friends were bringing me completely unrelated product ideas.

They said, “Eileen, you can make this!” So I started sewing again. I hadn’t sat at a sewing machine for about 30 years! Next came oilcloth tote bags, wine gift bags, panadieres (fabric bread baskets), double eyeglass cases, etc., etc. I named my company …

… and life was good!

Soon I had added beaded jewelry, fabric painting and woven bamboo place mats to my product line and was selling in galleries, expos and craft fairs. That led to my own gift shop and finally this website. My husband Chris handles the technical stuff, which is not my forte. I couldn’t do this without him.

So here we are! We hope you find what you are looking for at The Artful Crafter.

We chose the motto “The Artful Crafter – Helping Crafters to Be”, figuring there were probably more people out there like me – people who need to bring in extra cash and aren’t aware of their hidden talents.

My original intention was to advise other crafty people on how to get started crafting for profit, but soon casual crafters as well began writing with questions on problems they were having with a project or asking for craft ideas or tutorials.

The Artful Crafter’s motto has taken on a broader meaning; but it still fits! Have a crafting question? Just ask.
