Most people will likely have first heard of Gangnam through the popular song ‘Gangnam Style.’ Released back in 2012 by K-Pop icon Psy, the song was a love letter to the distinctive and iconic district in South Korea. Gangnam has always been known as the fashion hot spot of South Korea. Where the rich and fashionable congregate.
The song was a smash hit. And it did lead to a massive boost in tourism for Gangnam and South Korea. But the song only touched on one aspect of what makes Gangnam so unique. The district has so much to offer beyond its fashion and opulence. Not that those aspects of it aren’t huge selling points too.

Gangnam’s Natural Beauty
The image most people have of Gangnam is of an extremely developed and bustling district. Beautiful modern architecture and bustling streets. But Gangnam has a lot of hidden natural beauty too. It is home to some of the most picturesque gardens in all of South Korea.
The Seoul Forest is one of my absolute favorite places to visit while I’m in Gangnam. It has the perfect blend of lucious open spaces, tranquil ponds, cute paths winding through the trees, and plenty of art installations too. It is a truly inspiring place to visit and is not to be missed while you’re here.
Bongeun-sa Temple is one of the most beautiful historical landmarks in Gangnam. Not only is it an architectural marvel but it is surrounded by breathtaking gardens. The sense of calm and tranquility one feels while here is surprising given that it is nestled so close to the busy streets of Gangnam.
Karaoke
No where does karaoke quite like South Korea. And in South Korea, Gangnam is the undisputed king of karaoke. You will find the most eclectic mix of karaoke options here. So much so that you might find it hard to choose which ones to try out.
There are two different types of karaoke rooms available to you in Gangnam. The first is the traditional karaoke bar. This is the type you are likely most familiar with. The karaoke is open to everyone in the bar. With guests taking turns performing. These spaces are very social and lively. And are a great way to really throw yourself into Gangnam’s social scene.
The second type is the private karaoke rooms. These are ideal for those looking for a more intimate social experience. Karaoke is such a huge part of South Korean culture. Which means a lot of these private karaoke rooms are fitted with a huge range of amenities. Private bars. Bottle service. A comprehensive food menu. Some even come fitted with massage chairs!
Massage Parlors
South Korea is filled to the brim with a huge array of massage parlors. Each offering a myriad of amazing treatments guaranteed to help you relax. One thing you will see offered frequently at Gangnam massage parlors are fish pedicures. This is a massage where your feet are nibbled at by a group of small fish. The fish eat off the dead skin. Leaving your feet refreshed and healthier.
Hot stone massages are another popular option in Gangnam. These relaxing sessions will leave your whole body feeling like it has been wrapped in a warm blanket of pure relaxation. The massage is performed using a series of heated river stones that are then placed on key areas on your back. The masseuse will also incorporate elements of a Swedish massage as well.
Gangnam-Daero
No trip to Gangnam would be complete without a trip to the primary shopping area of the district. Gangnam-Daero has everything you could ever need right at hand. You will find all the big name brands from across the globe. As well as some brands unique only to South Korea.
There is also a plethora of restaurants and food kiosks to choose from here as well. Serving up a mixture of traditional South Korean cuisine and delicious light bites. Whatever your tastes, there is something for you!
